Does the government really belong to the people?

I know that the people chose who becomes mayor or a congressman, but we don't really chose who we would really want to be president. We must chose out of the options that are given. You don't chose an individual, you chose a person out of two parties.

When I turn 18 I can vote for president but during the primaries if I am not registered to a party I can't chose who gets to the final two.

I love that we have this democracy instead of another form of government. occasionally I feel that I am restricted to this option of democracy. I'm not a democrat or a republican. I am a person of multiple interests and I believe that the people who run my government should be diverse as well.
